Tabula Rasa:

Size Does Matter; Sizeism is Addressed at Smith
There was a boy in my seventh grade class whom the kids called Ketchup - a variation on his unique last name. We sat at a table together, a group of misfits in a class where everyone had already grouped off with friends. Our outward traits were what made us the misfits.

Out of Right Field

Muslim organization fights terrorism
The third anniversary of the September 11 attacks passed this Saturday. Most of the world passed the day in quiet remembrance and respect for the tragic event that forever changed the face of American politics and war throughout the world. In a surprising move, Kamal Nawash, founder of the Free Muslim Coalition against Terrorism, issued an apology for the attacks.

Don't just vote: the larger picture

I feel that the statement that accompanied the photograph of the upside down American flag was greatly misinterpreted, and I would like to take the time to explain my position in greater detail. Yes, this country is in distress! It seems clear that President Bush will be remembered as possibly the worst President in United States history: he is responsible for the loss of over 2 million jobs and an illegal and unjust war in Iraq, amongst other things.

Over four million students Left Behind

With the race for presidency rushing toward the finish line, my mind is not on tax cuts or military records, but on the youth of America. Three years ago, President Bush promised us that no child would be left behind in education, but as his first term in office comes to a close we are still waiting for the fulfillment of his promise.

Political Effectiveness at Smith

It is my senior year at Smith, and I still don't know what to make of campus politics. I think most students would characterize the environment here as highly political. Smith and the surrounding Pioneer Valley attract a host of prominent speakers, many of whom address current events and pressing political issues.

Letters to the Editor

Dear Editor, I wanted to write in support of last weeks article, "The Minority Should Not be Silenced by Fear." I definitely feel like there are times when I cannot voice my opinion because others might disagree. While I feel that campus should be a comfortable place for everyone, I hate that some of Smith's traditions need to be modified in order for that to happen.

Staff Editorial

Women in Politics
Staff Editorial Women in Politics From the perspective of one of the most feminist locations in the world, it is especially jarring to be made aware of just how few female politicians there are out there. Going to a single-sex institution provides four years of all female politicians on campus; how glorious it is! The downfall is the realization that those of us who choose to be active at Smith will eventually enter the down and dirty domain of real world politics, a domain that is typically not friendly, accepting, encouraging or supportive to the few women who dare to enter it.

Guns are awesome!

Hot off the press: AK-47s, reduced price! Come and get them! Past restrictions on these guns and 19 other semiautomatic weapons expired, so now you can shoot Bambi like the terrorist that he really is! Don't forget, however, when you travel to your NRA conference to celebrate the purchase of your new military-style automatic weapon, that you must leave your nail clippers at home.

In Greater Detail:

Looking to Smith's past for Smith's future
Each Smith student decides to attend Smith for their own reasons. Decisions are based on challenge, social climate, campus politics, location, and so on. While the array of reasons for sending Smith a check for the first semester are vast, one reason can be clearly identified: Smith's legacy.
