This weekend marks the thirtieth anniversary of the Ada Comstock Scholars program here at Smith. In honor of this significant milestone, the week of Oct. 3 through Oct. 9 has been declared Ada Celebration Week.
In a statement given Oct. 1, President Christ said, "In founding the college that bears her name, Sophia Smith wanted to extend the benefits of an excellent college education to women, sure that by doing so, she would increase their power for good.

Smith College never stops pushing to give it's students the best in technology as well as opportunities to research, train and educate the women pushing into tomorrow's workforce. With this in mind, it is no surprise that Smith is leading the country in instructing women pursuing the sciences as one of the top four-year colleges sending women to doctoral studies in the sciences.

On September 30, Neilson Browsing Room was full of people there to learn about "Objects and Object Lessons from the Jim Crow Museum." The lecturer was Dr. David Pilgrim (academic, activist and curator of the Jim Crow Museum of Racist Memorabilia), brought to Smith by Professor Nancy Marie Mithlo of the Department of Anthropology in association with her "Anthropology of Museums" class.

On October 1, Smith increased the mileage reimbursement rate to 48.5 cents per mile for the use of personal vehicles on Smith-related business. This change occurred after the IRS announced an 8-cent increase in the optional standard mileage rate for the use of employees when they use their personal vehicles on business-related trips.

Senate began this week with a call to oder at 7:05 p.m. and a roll call to determine if Senate met quorum. SGA VP Megan Ambrus then asked the Senate if Lindsey York, Senate Secretary, had all the Senators' names and e-mail addresses.
Two announcements were then made to the Senate.

While delivering a speech entitled "What You Do Matters: Creating Communities to Solve Global Problems," Nobel Peace Prize Laureate Jody Williams described the hurdles and misconceptions involved in activism, as well as the rewards and blessings. She gave the speech last Thursday, September 29 in the UMass Campus Center Auditorium.
