Construction is beginning on a Resource Center for Gender and Sexuality inside Wesley House on Smith's campus. This project will be funded by approximately $10,000 from a grant for the Student Government Association (SGA).
"We're hoping that this center will be used as a resource, not just for gay, bisexual or transsexual students, but for straight students as well," said Emily Taylor '08, SGA Secretary.

Smith College's Botanical Garden will be presenting an annual show of chrysanthemums at the Lyman Conservatory starting Nov. 5.
A tradition since the 1900s, the exhibit will feature about 600 pots of colorful chrysanthemums, showcasing up to 100 different varieties.

Mt. Holyoke Music Faculty Raise Katrina Aid Money
Mount Holyoke's Music Department faculty will perform in a benefit concert for the victims of Hurricane Katrina. They will play selections by Brahms, Ravel, Rachmaninoff, Richman and Vaughan Williams. The event will be Sunday, Nov.

The Class of 2009 holds the record for the most diverse student body in the history of Smith College, but Otelia Cromwell was the first black student who ambitiously opened the door to race relations in 1900.
Otelia Cromwell Day was created in 1989 to provide to the college community an opportunity for further education and reflection about issues of diversity and racism.

Former Indiana Congressman Lee Hamilton spoke about "How to Use American Power" for the annual Freedman Lecture on Wednesday, Oct. 26 in Wright Hall Auditorium.
The Freedman Lecture was established in 1985 by two brothers to honor their mother, a graduate of Smith College.

In the past few weeks the national campaign against corporate mogul Wal-Mart has found its way to Western Massachusetts and Smith College. A community effort in the Pioneer Valley has formed to halt the construction of a Super Center in Hadley, and Feminists of Smith Unite and Students for Social Justice and Institutional Change are getting involved.
