'Vagina Monologues' Boycott Will Make Women's Causes Suffer

Perhaps you have seen the posters around campus calling for a boycott of the "Vagina Monologues." Their claims about the globally-acclaimed feminist project reveal an ignorance of the production which begs the question, have the authors of these posters actually ever seen or read the "Vagina Monologues?" And if so, do they fully comprehend what this movement has accomplished? The poster asks, "Aren't women worth more than their 'private parts'?" and states, "'The Vagina Monologues' is not helping to end violence against women…instead, it degrades and reduces them to their sexual organs.

Valentine's Day is next Tuesday. However, instead of associating the day with love, romance and affection, students at Smith and across the country now associate the holiday with the zealous "V-Day" campaign and its accompanying rally cry, "The Vagina Monologues.
