Jeannette Quinn AC fights for treatment for Ugandan child

If you could go anywhere in the world, where would you go? Let's face it; we are more likely to choose a trip to Cape Town, South Africa, than Darfur, Sudan. A war zone is never a good vacation spot and, after all, who cares if people choose to kill each other? That being said, at least the genocide in Darfur has gotten more attention by the American media lately (Darfur rallies, college divestments and various funds); there are still other countries in similar, if not worse, predicaments that seldom get any American press-places like Uganda.

New York City's trans fat ban deserves national consideration

Trans fatty acids-also referred to as trans fats-are a type of unsaturated fat which occurs naturally in small quantities in foods such as meats and dairy products. But the artificial trans fatty acids consumed today are industrially-created, labeled on food products as partially hydrogenated oil and are known to be an unhealthy and non beneficial ingredient used in many types of food.

Foley scandal arouses numerous questions, concerns

Let's play a little word association game. When you think of adults soliciting minors, what word comes to mind? What about when you think of congressmen soliciting minors? For me, the words are shock and disgust and I have had ample opportunity to use them this week.

Death of anorexic model should be a wake-up call to industry

In August, 22-year-old fashion model Luisel Ramos stepped off a runway in Uruguay and headed to the dressing room for a costume change. Moments later she suffered a massive heart attack and died. Ramos's death was no fluke; the young model had been subsisting on green leaves and Diet Coke for the three months leading up to her death.

Women can fight as well as the men

The recent death of Emily Perez, the first female West Point graduate to die in Iraq, brings into light the roles of women in the military. Currently, women are prohibited from serving in positions that often see direct combat. This sheltering of women implies that all women lack the capability to handle direct combat, which is not true.

My Life at Smith

Just sleep on it, Smith
I knew something was wrong when I started dreaming about getting a good night's rest. And I really knew something was wrong when Friday finally rolled around, and I thought to myself, "Oh, the weekend, now I can finally sleep!" I know I am not the only student on campus who is obsessed with capturing the fleeting fantasy of sleep.

True Life: Hypoallergenic Cats

Every so often, a piece of news comes my way that strikes me as so absurd that my only response is to vigorously rub my eyes in disbelief. "No, no, no. THAT simply cannot be," I say to myself. "Shall I re-read just to ensure that my eyes have not failed me?" Alas, this week, I rubbed my eyes to point of redness.

Greetings from your SGA Cabinet

Many of you may wonder what is it exactly I do as secretary. She just types a lot, right? Well, I can't argue with that, I do type a lot, and very quickly, too. I take the minutes at every meeting; you can find these minutes on the SGA website-www.smith.

Staff Editorial: Understanding the meaning of 'Opinions'

The Sophian has received many letters in response to Heshani Wijemanne's opinion piece "The Transfer Loophole" from students who strongly disagreed with the writer's statements. We were pleased that so many people actively responded to the article and thus furthered the campus discussion of an often-ignored population, and we published every letter received in its entirety (save corrections for spelling, punctuation and grammar as well as coherence).

Letters to the Editor

Transferring schools is difficult, too; 'Second hand' extinguishers; Student revises quotation
Dear Sophian Editor: I am writing in response to staff writer Heshani Wijemanne's article "The transfer loophole: Easier on Second Chance?" published on Thursday, Sept. 14, 2006. Frankly, it is disappointing and disturbing to know a fellow Smithie would write such an arrogant and ignorant article.

Top Five things to do with the ridiculous surplus of apples you picked on Mountain Day

5. Skip joyously around Northampton carrying a basketful, and pass them out to strangers (and/or strange musicians). 4. See if you can convince your best friend to play a little game of "William Tell." 3. Decorate them with wooly hair and googly eyes; then play action adventure! 2.
