Ready yourselves, ladies. Sharpen that pencil, rip out that notebook page and flip open that laptop. Prepare to write the most angry letter to the editor you've ever written, because you - well, most of you - are not going to like what I have to say. I'll wait till you've gathered what you need.

1) The squirrels are wearing earmuffs and mittens. And so are you.
2) Jack Frost ran by and punched you in the face with his blustery winteriness. Kapow!
3) What exactly is that brown, sticky stuff that Phys Plant keeps pouring all over the ground?
4) The dining hall is serving up a steady diet of root vegetables and … root vegetables.

This is what I learned from the civil discourse faculty panel: First, don't vandalize a poster-make your own. Second, speech is an action, so don't hurt anybody. Third, when we bring up taboos of multiculturalism, it can get ugly.
Last Wednesday I took a break from the homework I had not yet started to indulge in the well-advertised discussion about free speech.
A Common Application for life
by Julia Reed in Opinions
Remember how complicated things were when you were applying to college? Remember all the stress, the pressure, the worry over financial aid packages and acceptance letters? The only thing that made that process easier for me was the handy device known as the Common Application.

Many of you may have seen the chalkings that demanded the removal of male professors from Smith College, and while the intent may have been merely to see the effect of the comment, it is an important issue and should be seriously considered. For years, Smith College prided itself on the fact that all of its professors were male; it was a mark of a good institution.

I decree today a day when we, my fellow Americans, push forth into our new American Destiny despite the perils abreast. We rightly claim what has been bestowed upon us-our rights, our freedom and our land. Furthermore, I stand here before you and say, friends, that America is but the nostril of the nose; the world is but a mere crumble of the cake; the moon, but the barley of the beer.

We need to question our system of values when children can no longer play freely at recess. An elementary school in Attleboro, Mass., recently banned children from playing tag, touch football or any other unsupervised chase game during recess. This is just one example of a trend that is showing up in many regions across the country.

In his farewell address, former President Carter said, "For this generation, life is nuclear survival, liberty is human rights and the pursuit of happiness is a planet whose resources are devoted to the physical and spiritual nourishment of its inhabitants.

Hi everyone! It is my pleasure this week to report on the happenings in the SGA Cabinet. I am the chair of the Organization Resources Committee, or ORC. My 15-student committee oversees all things related to the many organizations here. In September, we allocated money to each organization for the year and now we meet weekly to talk about things that are going on with the organizations.
Coke's human rights abuses should not be tolerated

To the Editor:
Coke Off Campus, a subdivision of Students for Social Justice and Institutional Change (SSJIC), held a "Take A Keg 'Stand' Against Coke" on October 12. Group volunteers offered passersby informational fliers and drinks from a keg of locally brewed root beer to raise awareness of Coca-Cola's human rights abuses and of Smith College's power to influence Coca-Cola.
