Smith should abolish its early decision program

As the years progress and the college admissions process becomes more competitive and convoluted, more and more ways arise to manipulate one's way into one's top college pic. For the first time, the Ivy Leagues surprisingly have taken one of them away-and we should follow.

Black history is American history

Living in America for nine years, I've seen everything including celebrations of pumpkins, turkeys, trees and even dead presidents. Growing up in francophone West Africa, I was both annoyed and astonished to see that Americans appreciated so many things that they would put specific days aside just to celebrate them.

My Smith Life: Learning the secrets of 'that girl'

It's the middle of a class discussion: An idea forms in my head, one that's opposite to the topic at hand. Yet no matter how developed it is, even if the words to express it are right at the forefront of my mind and at the tip of my tongue...it refuses to come out.

Love in a war zone gives hope that new life can begin in Iraq

The history of warfare is full of courageous stories. The great majority speak of events like the charge of the light brigade, the battle of Gettysburg, the storming of the beaches of Normandy and other acts of "big courage." Classes on etiquette may be needed again

Over Family Weekend my parents and I were fortunate enough to encounter a new species of Smithie in her own habitat. We were having a nice calm brunch in one of the houses when we spotted her - using both hands, without utensils, to shovel food into her mouth.

Students search for spirituality at Smith

In the name of the father, the son, and the holy absence-at least that's what I think of when talking about religion on campus. Religion is not entirely removed but absent from a typical day at Smith. Look at the flyers posted on the main floor of Seelye, the paper inundations we receive in our mailboxes, dining hall conversation or chalkings around campus.

Smith should use fair labor practices for new science building

Smith's new 140,000-square-foot science and engineering building is slated for groundbreaking next semester at the corner of Green Street and Belmont Avenue. The facilities will serve engineering, computer science, chemistry and other molecular sciences, as well as house academic support areas.

Letters to the Editor

To the Editor: I believe there is a problem with smoking on campus. I also believe that smoking is a personal choice. So, what gives me the right to interfere with that personal choice? As the saying goes, your right to swing your fist ends where my nose begins.

Top Five things to do now that midterms are over

1. Clean your room, or at least make it clean enough so you can see your floor. You do remember your floor, right? 2. Go to the gym and work off all those Halloween candy calories. 3. Catch up on back episodes of Project Runway, Grey's Anatomy and America's Next Top Model.
