Kids throwing paper balls, cursing and beating each other up - nothing in her own schooling had prepared Kristen Shuart '00 for her first year of teaching in a New York City public school.
"There were so many problems that needed Band-Aids," Shuart recalled of her first teaching assignment in a Washington Heights middle school, where most of the students were on the free-lunch program and 90 percent were Dominican.
