A recent study performed by Dr. Esther van den Wildenberg from the University of Maastricht in the Netherlands targeted a specific gene allele linked to alcoholism. The gene mutation involves a cell structure called the mu-opioid receptor. In previous studies, this receptor has been shown to bind a pain-relieving chemical that the body releases in response to alcohol intake and other stimuli.
