Prayers, fasting mark Ramadan observances

This month, members of Smith's Muslim community will celebrate Ramadan, the holiest month of the Islamic calendar. Prayer, fasting and self-reflection form much of the holy observance, which takes place from Sept. 13 to Oct. 13 this year. The college and Al-Iman, the student Muslim organization on campus, has planned several events for the month.

Connecticut man arrested at Smith after murder threat Northampton Police arrested Zachary Mahoney, 19, of Enfield, Conn., after he threatened to kill the boyfriend of a Chase-Duckett resident last Thursday, Sept. 13. After receiving several threatening text messages from Mahoney, including one where he threatened to kill the student's current boyfriend when he came to campus, the student notified the Public Safety department.
