The War in Iraq hit a little too close to home recently as Smith College lost one of its own. Dr. Roselle Hoffmaster, 32, a 1998 graduate died Sept. 21 in Iraq. Her death was not as a result of combat, according to a statement released by Fort Drum, the base at which she was stationed.

Students who regularly download music should beware: The Recording Industry Association of America is actively seeking students who violate the no-downloading policy and slapping them with lawsuits or serious fines.
Last week, the Daily Hampshire Gazette reported that the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) asked 83 Massachusetts college students to pay $3,000 each or be faced with serious lawsuits.

From Sunday, Sept. 23, to Wednesday, Sept. 26, a New England Association of Schools and Colleges (NEASC) accreditation team visited Smith's campus to conduct the observations and discussions necessary to complete a full reaccreditation of the college.

Smith College hosted the second annual Student Global AIDS Campaign New England Regional Summit on Friday, Sept. 28 and Saturday, Sept. 29. Representatives from Smith College, Mount Holyoke College, Wesleyan University and Clark University gathered in Seelye Hall for a weekend of guest speakers, lectures, workshops and discussions.

Smith, Food Bank of Western Massachusetts combat hunger
The college and the Food Bank of Western Massachusetts ask students, faculty and staff to participate in a campus-wide food drive from Oct. 1 to Oct. 5. Food drive organizers request that participants donate non-perishable foods such as canned items, rice and pasta; the items will be placed in drop-off receptacles in the Campus Center, in houses and other places on campus.
