"I am not here as a firefighter trying to put out the flames of this racial incident or to give a Kumbaya-My-Lord-We-Are-All-a-Big-Happy-Family speech to make most people at Smith feel good about themselves," he said. "I am here today to speak truth to power about race matters in contemporary America and, in the process, connect the dots about this 'incident,' an incident and an aftermath which I believe are emblematic about how race works in post-civil rights America."

A New Consciousness About Global Warming

Early-rising students received a cold shower of dire reality at the keynote speech of Focus the Nation, the student-organized day of educational and collaborative talks on global warming on Thursday, Jan. 31 in Weinstein Auditorium. Michael Klare, Five College professor of peace & world security studies gave his speech titled "Global Warming: the Human Dimension".

Setting the Stage for Super Tuesday
Reports are in: the political tsunami of 2008 struck the United States on Feb. 5. Fox news, CNN and Smith College students were there live to cover the event. The death toll is difficult to predict. Tsunami Tuesday, otherwise known as Super Tuesday, the highly anticipated presidential primary taking place across the nation, did not care if you were a Republican or Democrat when it hit.

'A Day On, Not a Day Off'

Service Projects Marked MLK Day
Martin Luther King, Jr. Day was designated in 1994 as a national day of service, and this year a number of Smith students and staff members spent their day giving back to the community. Monday, January 21, around 60 registered volunteers decorated the Calvin Coolidge Nursing Center for Valentine's Day, painted a new office for Arise (a nonprofit group that advocates and offers support for individuals with disabilities of all kinds), read letters for the Prison Book Project or worked for the day with another local volunteer agency.

Female Black Panther Leader Challenges Discrimination

As part of Smith College's Black History Month activities, Elaine Brown, the first and only woman to lead the Black Panther Party, spoke in Weinstein Auditorium Monday night. Brown's talk focused on the question: "Where do we go from here?"

Kate Bornstein Comes to Smith

Perhaps what is one of the most interesting things about Kate Bornstein is her penchant for creative book titles. To date, Kate has published four books: "My Gender Workbook: How to Become a Real Man, a Real Woman, the Real You, or Something Else Entirely," "Nearly Roadkill: An Infobahn Erotic Adventure," "Gender Outlaw: On Men, Women, and the Rest of Us" and most recently, "Hello Cruel World: 101 Alternatives to Suicide for Teens, Freaks, and Other Outlaws.

Your SGA and You

SGA cabinet is focusing on the House Competition that we are cosponsoring with the House Presidents Association (HPA). There are five events that you can attend and get house points for and each event has prizes. The prizes are awarded on a first come first serve basis.

REAL WORLD CASTING CALL AT UMASS MTV will hold an open casting call for Season 21 of The Real World on Tuesday, Feb. 12 from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the UMass Student Union Ballroom. People between the ages of 18 and 24 are welcome to audition. Applicants must bring a recent picture of themselves and photo ID.
