Last Wednesday, Oct. 15, the Smith College field hockey team sponsored an all-day celebration on Chapin Lawn in honor of Love Your Body Day. In the past, other organizations such as Feminists of Smith Unite and Residence Life have organized Love Your Body Day events, but this year's daylong fair was the first of its kind.

On Sept. 26, 2008, the American Council of Trustees and Alumni began sending a series of letters to several Ivy League University trustee committees in an attempt to rally support for ROTC campus programs after years of non-recognition. The letters claimed that non-recognition on a select group of campuses including Yale, Brown and Harvard among others, undermines "America's ideal of self-government" and separates a "moral connection to those Americans we send into harm's way.

Earlier this month, Smith College ranked seventh on The Ultimate College Bowl's list of students registered to vote by percentage. Though the college has since dropped out of the top 10, the Smith Democrats and Smith Republicans are both extremely positive about the student body's political involvement this year.

The Smith College Museum of Art (SCMA) was recently awarded a $7,800 grant by the Massachusetts Cultural Council (MCC). MCC is a state agency that awards operational grants to cultural entities across the state in three-year cycles based on the type of cultural experience offered by each entity.

Northampton city officials have petitioned the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) to expand the city's landfill. The landfill is located just over five miles from Smith on Glendale Road in Florence. The proposed expansion would extend the landfill so that it sits above the Maloney well, a recharge area for the Barnes Aquifer.
