As a result of the recession, many Smith students on work-study are experiencing a decrease in the number of hours they are able to work each week. However, this is not due to any funding cuts by Smith. According to Valerie Schumacher, student employment/fund coordinator, the decreases resulted from an increased number of student workers.

Amherst's Board of Trustees discusses budgetary concerns with the community
Last week, the Amherst College Board of Trustees met with community members to discuss the school's financial situation. According to The Amherst Student, the college's endowment has fallen by 26 percent.

On Feb. 7, Hampshire College's Board of Trustees announced that the college would be transferring assets held in a State Street Global Advisors fund to another fund.
The board based the decision on a screening by KLD Research & Analysis, a reviewer for socially responsible investment.

On Feb. 13, just a few weeks before spring vacation, residents of Chase and Duckett Houses received a notice from Residence Life that their houses would be closed over Spring Break for "fire alarm system maintenance" and they would need to seek lodging elsewhere.

The National Book Critics Circle (NBCC) recently nominated Smith Afro-American studies professor Paula Giddings' book, "A Sword Among Lions: Ida B. Wells and the Campaign Against Lynching," for the 2008 Biography prize. Giddings spent over 20 years working on the book before it was finally published in 2008.

This spring, nearly 170 Smith students applied to join the Residence Life staff. This represents a definite increase of applicants compared to last year, and the hiring process will be tough, given that of the 76 total positions, only around 35 will be open to new applicants.

Smith's Women and Financial Independence (WFI) Program is hosting a three-part entrepreneurship lunch series dedicated to address the nuts and bolts of an elevator pitch. Attendees will learn how to convince a potential investor to invest in their product in the time it takes to get from one floor to another via elevator.
