On Feb. 19, President Carol Christ, Dean Maureen Mahoney, Dean of Enrollment Audrey Smith, Sid Dalby from the Admission office and Dean of the Junior and Ada Comstock Classes Erika Laquer met to discuss their plan to lower the target class size of the Ada Comstock Scholar program from around 55 students to 33.

A recent email from President Carol Christ outlining various potential budget reduction strategies has been the cause of much concern and opposition in the Smith community. On Tuesday, the Dean of the College, Maureen Mahoney; the Vice President for Finance and Administration, Ruth Constantine; and President Christ held an open forum for Smith students to discuss these concerns.

Last Thursday afternoon, students and members of the Five College community gathered in Stoddard Auditorium to attend a faculty panel entitled "Peace in Our Time? War and Conflict Resolution in the Middle East."
Professors Justin Cammy of Jewish Studies, Suleiman Mourad of Religion, Donna Divine of Government, and Nadya Sbati of History, comprised the panel, which was moderated by Professor Gregory White, of Government.

With student-run organizations like Spectrum, Prism and Transcending Gender, there has always been support for students of non-heterosexual orientations on the Smith campus. This year, the Smith Asexuals Club is joining these organizations as the first on-campus support group for asexuals.

While installing air conditioning equipment in the Helen Hills Hills Chapel early last week, Facilities Management made a surprising discovery. They found a time capsule that had been buried under the chapel's cornerstone since its dedication in 1955.
According to Senior Projects Manager and Assistant to the Director Charles Conant, when Facilities Management came across the "concrete pillar-like thing hanging from the ceiling" of the chapel basement, he "had a suspicion that it might be a [time capsule], but we had no way of knowing if anything was ever put in it.

Despite the recession, Smith's Community Service Office is persisting with fundraising efforts. According to the Fund Drive co-chair, Molly Sauvain '11, the CSO hopes to raise $43,000, primarily through donations collected on campus.
Sauvain said that the CSO tries to contact students individually.

Tensions surrounding recent events involving Israel and Palestine may well have contributed to the high attendance of Rashid Khalidi's lecture at Amherst College on Thursday, Feb. 26, which was widely anticipated by the Five College Consortium.
The Edward Said Professor of Modern Arab Studies at Columbia University, as well as the director of the University's Middle East Institute, Khalidi is considered one of the foremost scholars on Palestine and the broader Middle East.

Mount Holyoke President steps down
After 13 years, Mount Holyoke College President Joanne V. Creighton plans to resign in June of 2010. Although Creighton hopes the transition to a new president will be "seamless," the Chair of the Mount Holyoke Board of Trustees said that it "adds more uncertainty to these hard economic times," according to the Mount Holyoke News.
