"Oh no, she threw up! Do you think it's the swine? Quick, quarantine her!" Smithies have been freaking out recently, and rightfully so, for the swine flu has officially reached us. Instead of buying myself a personal bubble to hide in and avoid the germs, I have been sticking to the classic doctrine of frequent hand washing, avoiding areas where sick students are present, and not sharing drink or food.

There are nuns everywhere in Florence: padding quietly down the street, on the bus, on bikes with their habits flying in the breeze. They may be one of my favorite aspects of my chosen Junior-Year-Abroad city.
Like most Italians, I deeply respect and admire nuns for their social work and their total dedication to something beyond themselves.

The Sophian has mixed feelings about Otelia Cromwell Day. We think it is important as a memorial and a symbol but think that, as an event, it has been mismanaged. The day seems to have self-congratulatory motives, while the events simply "preach to the choir" - the people who are interested in diversity and who support diversity causes on campus are the only ones who show up, other than those required to attend for a class.

To an outsider, America seems like a very strange country. Here, employees are reminded to wash their hands after using the restroom, people start the engines of their cars even before all passengers are seated and almost everything is "totally awesome."
Don't get me wrong - I wouldn't be here if I didn't like it.

Book and movie themed T-shirts are nothing new. Publishers and Hot Topic stores have been selling them for years. But the Twilight apparel craze has gone far beyond the occasional "Team Edward" or "Team Jacob" sweater and crossed into a full-on creepy cultural obsession.

The "Sex and the Smithie" column is written by a different Smith student each week.
I have a crush on my professor. Don't worry though; it's not creepy. It doesn't actually cross boundaries, and no one's going to get fired. But there are days, usually strategically placed on the menstrual cycle, when I see that wrinkling face and melt like Chase-Duckett mac and cheese.
