S.S. Smith sailed the seas during World War II

On April 4, 1945, Herbert Davis, then the president of Smith College, received a letter from the Maritime Commission informing him that a Victory ship would be named in honor of Smith College. Although it would be impossible to speculate exactly how Davis reacted to this piece of news, it is reasonable to assume that the letter delivered to him was a source of much honor.

Numerous barriers exist for people with developmental disabilities and mental health challenges. Research has indicated that people with disabilities have a life span that is on average 25 years shorter than those without disabilities. Since the equal-opportunity gym Fit Together opened in 2007, however, Western Massachusetts residents with mental or physical disabilities face one less barrier - the lack of a supportive and educational environment in which to exercise.
