The feminist pop-punk band Le Tigre will perform at Smith on March 1 in the Campus Center Carroll Room at 8 p.m. The groups Lesbians on Ecstasy and hey willpower will open.

Le Tigre is made up of Kathleen Hanna, Johanna Fateman and JD Samson. Members of the New York-based band do not have a fixed role in each song, but rather they alternate between beat-making, lyric-writing and video-editing, and playing various instruments on stage.

The group describes its music as "electronic feminist punk," which they say they started in order to provide "something for our community to dance to." The group continues on their webpage: "In our scene, the notion of 'community' had been so problematized by postmodern theory and identity politics gone haywire, that it was easier retreat to irony or purely oppositional self-definitions," making them an ideal group for the Smith music scene.

Le Tigre is in the middle of an international tour promoting their latest album, "This Island," which features a wide variety of songs - from a punked-up cover of Pointer Sisters' "I'm So Excited," to a synthesized dance beat comprised solely of anti-war speeches by celebrities such as Susan Sarandon and the Reverend Al Shapton. Le Tigre also gets serious with several songs about gender and identity politics.

Tickets will go on sale in the Campus Center on February 15. They are $10 with a Smith ID.
