Construction is beginning on a Resource Center for Gender and Sexuality inside Wesley House on Smith's campus. This project will be funded by approximately $10,000 from a grant for the Student Government Association (SGA).

"We're hoping that this center will be used as a resource, not just for gay, bisexual or transsexual students, but for straight students as well," said Emily Taylor '08, SGA Secretary. "We want anyone who is questioning their sexuality to take advantage of this center."

After final approval from the college administration was granted last year, the plan has been finalized and construction has begun. It will be named the Resource Center for Gender and Sexuality. There will be an open house within the next few weeks.

The Resource Center is not being built for academic purposes, though many students at Smith College are focusing on contemporary issues that will also be dealt with at the center.

There will be a part-time student or volunteer working at the center during its open hours, but the creators of the Resource Center for Gender and Sexuality are hoping for more.

"Maybe as the year progresses, or next year, we can get a full-time paid staff position there," Taylor said. "But this is an important addition to the college campus if people need support groups. You can come into the center and talk, ask questions, no matter what your sexual preference is."

Also, many students who contributed to the planning of this project want this new center to be mentioned or shown on the college campus tour for prospective students.

The center will house information focusing on any aspect of sexuality for any sexual preference. It is meant for education of every Smith student. There will most likely be support groups and talk sessions.
