Letter to the Editor: Bicycle Enthusiasts Start Group on Campus
Issue date: 11/3/05 Section: Opinion
Yo Smith kids, peak oil got you down? Interested in bicycles as a way to subvert society's fuel dependence, stay fit and build community? Would you like to learn more about how to fix, fine-tune and make bikes look great? Then consider being part of a new project to make bikes more accessible to the Smith community! Currently we are but a few dedicated bicycle enthusiasts with dreams of creating a group on campus united around bike love, but we need more interested folks (of all abilities) to share their energy and ideas to make this project happen.
Some plans in progress: getting a permanent space on campus for a bike workshop where we can store tools/bikes/etc.; getting together to share skills every Sunday with our Bike Fixin' workshops; and fixing up abandoned and busted bikes with the idea of making them available for use on a semester basis for a small fee and returnable down payment (or work exchange or barter). We're looking to create positive energy on campus surrounding bike safety and enthusiasm, to form a community bike program similar to the YellowBike program that exists at Hampshire College, and to come up with a rad name for the group!
Currently we are having bike fixin' workshops every Sunday, 3 p.m. at Capen House. Everyone is welcome.
