Fourth seeded Smith volleyball team beat Wellesley 3-1 on November 1. The Pioneers will advance to the semifinal round on Friday where they will face top seeded M.I.T. in Cambridge. Sara Hoffman'08, playing with a torn ACL, tallied 6 blocks to spark the team's defense, helping her team win game 2 by 30-15, a 15-point margin. Sammy Lyon '08, who leads the conference in blocks per game with 11.47, encouraged the Smith offense with a spike and 3 blocks during the next nine straight points to help the team to the 18-9 lead.
The Smith Crew team placed second on October 29, at the annual Seven Sisters Regatta on the Charles River. Under snowy conditions, Mont Holyoke won the title by two points over the defending Smith team. The Pioneers won the varsity 8 race in a time of 14:29:3 and finished first and second in the 2nd varsity 8 races with times 15:08:3 and 15:51:0. The novice 8 placed fourth (17:32:4), whiles the 2nd Novice 8 boats finished third and fifth. Kristina Latta-Landefeld, Leigh Eubank and Sophia Savage were named to the All-Regatta team.
The Smith soccer team beat (1-0) the Babson College Beavers on October 29 in the quarterfinal match of the 2005 New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference Soccer Championship. The fifth seeded Pioneers advanced to the final four of the championship at the 98:40 mark as senior Monroe Peterson took a pass from Johanna Perez and Estefi Alvarez.
The equestrian team took third place with twenty-seven points behind Mont Holyoke (43 points) and the University of Massachusetts (40 points) on October 29. Junior Emily Hertz won a blue and red ribbon with Michaela LeBlanc winning the only other blue ribbon for Smith. Samantha Leland, Katherine Obara, Martha MaloneyHuss and Kristyn Hall all won red ribbons with Elyse Lasser, Christine Stine and Layne Chaya finishing in third place.
The Smith College field hockey team lost (6-0) to number one seed Babson College on October 29 in the quarterfinal game in the 2005 NEWMAC Field Hockey Championship. Smith senior Megan Maguire stopped 25 shots in goal for the Pioneers. The Smith team ends the season with an overall record of 6-11.
