The Hungry Ghost: Not Just A Clever Name

Issue date: 9/20/07 Section: Features
The Hungry Ghost is very involved with the local community. One of the ways that they try to put bread into a bigger context is through their annual bread festival. This year's festival is the fourth one they have hosted, and every year they bring in local farmers, musicians and performers in an effort to teach people about the intricate webs that connect everyone, even through something as seemingly simple as bread. The bread festival will be held Sunday, Sept. 23 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., right outside of the bakery. It will be a good chance to check out what kinds of things they are baking and to learn about local products such as cheeses, jams and honey.
My curiosity satisfied, I departed with a menu and the intent to come back to try more of the wonderful breads that they bake. Varieties include French, eight-grain, spelt, rye, rosemary and olive and semolina fougasse. Their baking schedule rotates daily, so there is always something different available. As well as cooking all of their own organic sourdough breads, they also cook their own pastries and quiche. The Hungry Ghost is open Tuesdays through Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Sundays from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. I highly encourage all Smithies to stop in and discover the pleasures of homemade bread for yourselves!

Listen Up! ... If you miss the taste and feel of REAL bread - the kind of big, round loafs Baldwin Hill Bakery in Phillipston, MA used to bake - then you'll LOVE the bread baked here in Northampton at The Hungry Ghost. (Continued…)
