In 1999, the Christian Science Monitor reported that the top two books Smith students purchased from Amazon.com were "The Double Helix: A Personal Account of the Discovery of the Structure of DNA" and "The Printing Revolution in Early Modern Europe."

The alumnae who graduated in this studious class have demonstrated their drive and ability in the ten short years since their graduation.

Some have gone on to professorships, such as Elizabeth Kennedy at Loyola College and Margaret Bruchac at the University of Connecticut; others are writers, such as Abe Louise Young, a widely published, award-winning poet and activist; and many others have pursued interests in other fields and achieved success as well.

Cherry Gumapas has worked as an HIV/AIDS behavior change and communications specialist with team USAID/Maputo; Erin Casler was elected Miss Deaf America in 2005; Jessie Rauch has used her extensive experience as a graphic designer and creative thinker to design and maintain the Web site for the Class of 1999.

These women's experience at Smith has surely affected the ways they see the world and their lives since then. In their final year at Smith, these alumnae saw a war in Kosovo, the development of the Monica Lewinsky scandal and the debuts of Spongebob Squarepants and Napster.

President Ruth Simmons, who upon her appointment to Smith became the first black woman president of any major college or university, led the college during these years.

1999 also marked the establishment of the first engineering program at an American women's college, the Picker Engineering Program.
