Halloween at the movies

It's that time of year. Yes, Halloween is upon us once again. Of course, this holiday means many things to different people.
For some - mostly children - it means dressing up in elaborate costumes and running around like madmen who are desperate for candy. For others, it means dressing down to as little as possible and begging for something else entirely. Still others choose to spend their time on All Hallows' Eve, for lack of a better term, scaring themselves silly.
For those of you who intend to spend your night at a theater in front of the silver screen or at home in front of the TV, this is for you.
Fortunately for you moviegoers, there are several options in the horror department this year. Firstly, there is Saw VI - yes, another movie. If you're looking for brutal, over-the-top violence and "mind games," this is the movie for you. Yet, if you have seen one, haven't you really seen them all?
Next on my list is The Stepfather. I was fortunate enough to experience this gem of a remake last week. If your ideal horror movie involves shoddy acting, a ridiculous premise and a predictable story line, then look no further. Personally, I love this movie and all other movies like it - yes, I am being serious. They are mindless fun and, believe it or not, sometimes even a bit scary.
Also, two movies are available this year that promise to be truly terrifying. The first, Paranormal Activity, is said to have scared Steven Spielberg so badly that he could not finish it. In the spirit of The Blair Witch Project, the movie itself is supposedly the edited version of home movies taken by a couple that believe they are being haunted by an evil entity.
Although I have not personally mustered up the courage to see Paranormal yet, I have heard nothing but good things about it - and by good things I of course mean that my friends who saw it still are not sleeping without their nightlights.
Antichrist is another film that looks truly horrifying in that unnatural, disturbing, unsettling way. Unfortunately, I have not yet had the opportunity to see this one either, which may or may not be due to the fact that the previews themselves have been keeping me up at night.

This is a bit silly, considering it seems that you haven't seen any of the movies that you are talking about, except for The Stepfather which is the least critically acclaimed of the bunch, and Zombieland (which was decent). (Continued…)

What, no love for the cult classics? The Rocky Horror Picture Show, traditionally shown at midnight on Halloween, may not have guts and gore galore, but it's camp, it's fun, it's got rockin' music and Tim Curry!
If that's too ancient for you, why not Repo: The Genetic Opera? Again, music, camp, fun, plus a bit more blood for those of you who like that sort of thing. (Continued…)
