I tried to resist. I really did - and considering that I am someone who has already admitted to watching America's Next Top Model, The Hills and The City, that is saying something. But I just could not do it.

Now, for one of the first times, I am happy that I have little to no willpower because I have discovered one of the fall's best TV shows - The Vampire Diaries. Really! I am not just saying this because Halloween is coming up - although that does make this column seasonally appropriate. But this show is definitely one worth watching.

Believe me, despite the vampire saturation that seems to have taken over pop culture lately, this is not what sucked me in - sucked, get it … vampires? Right, I apologize for that one.

I am not a vampire fan, and I have not seen True Blood yet. I am basically afraid to watch it because I have heard that it is ridiculously addictive, and I already do not have enough time on my hands because of my relationship with my TV - we are very close. Where would I find the time not to do my reading, or not do my laundry? They are not going to not do themselves.

And Twilight? Sure, I watched the first one and again once my friends and I discovered the super fun drinking game that you can play to Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart's repetitive facial expressions. But a Twi-hard? Not I.

So, what drew me to The Vampire Diaries in the first place? High school. I love any dramas that are set in the hallowed halls of that institution of teenage pain and angst.

Part of it may have to do with the fact that I did not really have a super dramatic high-school experience. I mean, I had to wear a uniform, which was emotionally - and socially - scarring. So I want to see serious made-for-TV high-school drama. It seems much more realistic to me. Or at least more fashionable.

Fortunately for me, The Vampire Diaries has found the perfect formula to fuel my high-school drama addiction.

First off, the vampires are actually interesting characters, not just mysterious and messed up because they are both vampires - although I guess that would be fair. Stefan and Damon Salvatore are the vampires, and they are some really attractive ones. The former is a good vampire who only drinks blood from animals, and the latter is a super badass who drinks human blood and is, therefore, more powerful than his squirrel-sucking brother. These two do not get along. Surprise.

"So, she is basically going to be running around next week trying to deal with her newfound thirst for blood while Stefan chases her around with some sort of roadkill for her to munch on and Damon tries to get her in touch with her baser instincts. (Continued…)
