One English major expressed her excitement for the course. "This class sounds amazing," Sarah Mueller '10 said. "We're so lucky at Smith to have access to so many primary source materials, and I think classes that incorporate these resources are a great idea. The Sophia Smith Collection is so lovely, and we should use it as much as we can during our time here. Also, learning how to work with documents like these is very useful if you plan to go farther in all sorts of literature work."

The course is limited to only 12 students. Hosmer explained the small capacity: "This is a very special course where students can have an access to very precious materials, which mostly are irreplaceable." Insurance and security matters, as well as the limited space in the Rare Book Room and the Museum of Art, prevent the course from offering larger enrollment.

"I'd love to take it," Mueller said. "And if I can't ... I'll be jealous of everyone in it."

Hosmer said he is looking for students who are enthusiastically interested in English, especially in women's writing. The class is an advanced English class, so it is not suitable for first-years or inexperienced writers, but students from other departments are welcome to join the class. According to Hosmer, "Studying is having fun and it is fun working with the real precious materials."
