Fortunately, this has not influenced the club's musical, selection and Pippin has many male characters. The surprise is that most of the shows songs are sung as originally intended, with only a few transposed into higher octaves. Richardson highlighted that this is ideal for women with lower ranges, as altos are often assigned to chorus while sopranos take the female leads.
Becky Roberts '12, playing the title role, agreed. "It doubles your chances for a part in the show," she said.
It wasn't such an easy transition for Alice Woodward '12, who is playing Charlemagne. "It was fun," she said, "but I had to work on controlling my girly mannerisms - like putting my hand on my hip or sticking my booty out."
Perhaps what is more interesting than seeing the show's characters in drag is seeing what this club achieves with a limited budget. The cast builds all of the sets. Costumes are begged and borrowed from local theater companies and parents' closets. This makes for a nice change from the main source of dramatic performances on campus, the theater department.
"I'd rather do a show that's low on a budget but high on energy," Roberts said.
